Ro Subramonian
is an editor, filmmaker, and creative producer based out of Brooklyn, NY.
Born in Manhattan, raised in Queens, transformed in Chennai, and shaped by Boston, Ro brings a layered outlook to every frame they cut. Highly organized and detail-oriented, with hands-on experience in project management, workflow optimization, and operational support for creative organizations. Working video editor through freelance and personal projects.
Growing up between worlds, it was easy to feel lost, but somewhere along the way they were able to find their path through thoughtful observation, exposure and reflection. Their approach to the craft is inseparable from how they pay attention to the world: observing what people say and don’t say, noticing mise-en-scène in the natural and architectural compositions of our physical world, finding intention hiding in the accidents. They’re drawn to the collapse of binaries, to the philosophy that two contradictory realities can occupy the same space, and they bring that sensibility into how they work.
Editing became their way of playing with the pieces of these puzzles. Their approach to editing is intentional and deliberate, down to the frame. Every cut is a decision, every frame a choice, and they find that level of precision genuinely satisfying. They also bring the same care to organization, workflow and communication as they do to the edit itself.
They studied Media & Screen Studies and Music Industry at Northeastern University, but most of their learning came from concert floors, independent shoots, and late-night edits. Then, they trained formally at Manhattan Edit Workshop, became AVID-certified, and spent time at 7 News WHDH-TV, where they found a love for real-time pressure and precision. Each experience brought them something unique: collaboration in DIY spaces, creativity under professional training, discipline in broadcast. Their work now spans narrative, documentary, and experimental video, and they’re interested in working in live-broadcast and community arts spaces too.
They founded FL1X, a collective for DIY filmmakers figuring it out together. FL1X emerged to address the high barrier of entry filmmaking can carry, as well as from the desire for community. With the support of GRRL HAUS CINEMA and creatives from Boston and NYC, they’re growing social media platforms and hosting screenings in basement venues. They’re also scheming to evolve it into something larger.
Repertory cinema enthusiast, physical media collector, and a MiniDV camcorder owner. When they’re not editing or working yet another shift, Ro’s probably attempting a puzzle game, watching a flick, or interviewing some unsuspecting soul. Find them on Letterboxd, Instagram, or in a timeline somewhere deep..
